James M. Wootan
Of Counsel
James M. Wootan joined the firm in an "of counsel" relationship in 1987. Mr. Wootan graduated from Tulane University and obtained his law degree from Mercer University's Walter F. George School of Law and a Master of Law in Taxation degree from Emory University School of Law. Mr. Wootan's primary areas of practice include taxation, business entities, probate, trust and estates, elder law and veterans' law.
ESTATE PLANNING
Preparation of wills and trusts, family limited partnerships and other techniques to provide for the orderly transfer of property with the minimum tax exposure.
PLANNING FOR MEDICAID
Assists individuals, families and other attorneys in the creation and approval of special needs trusts to obtain and maintain qualification for Medicaid and other public programs.
BUSINESS PLANNING
Assists individuals and groups in forming and organizing business arrangements such as corporations and limited liability companies and the transfer of ownership between individuals through sales and buy sell agreements.
PROBATE COURT
Represents individuals in the probate of last wills and testament, the appoint of personal representatives for decedent estates, assists in the administration of estates, represents and assists in appointment of guardians for minors and conservators, and administration of guardianships and conservatorships, represents parties in disputed matters in the probate courts.
ELDER LAW
Advise and assist in planning for issues that arise with aging.
VETERANS
Is certified to represent claimants before the Department of Veteran Affairs in initial claims and appeals and to advise veterans and their families regarding availability of obtaining benefits.
TAX REPRESENTATION
Represents taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service and Georgia Department of Revenue in audits, appeals and litigation in the United States Tax Court and the United States District Court.
